The Sculptor in the Studio is the first book devoted to Barbara Hepworth’s St Ives studio-home, and demonstrates its centrality to her art and life. The Studio, and especially the garden that Hepworth shaped (now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden), was the primary and ideal context in which her sculptures were viewed, and many remain today as she placed them.
Illustrated with numerous archival photographs, and drawing on Hepworth’s personal correspondence, family memories and records, it is a fascinating and intimate insight into the life and work of one of Britain’s most extraordinary artists. Art historian Sophie Bowness is Hepworth’s granddaughter and a Trustee of the Hepworth Estate.
