The act of bringing an evergreen tree inside, dressing it up to suit our own definition of festive, and gathering around it to pass the shortest of days, is a curious tradition we’ve been drawn to for centuries. Where did this custom originate? What does the Christmas tree mean to you? And how can we extend its life, now the festivities are over?
Back in the days, the top of the Christmas tree used to be sawn off and turned into a whisk to stir the porridge in the year to come. Artist Tine Colen has been researching crafts and traditions for years, looking for ways to share and rethink them, and integrate them into her own practice.
On this Sunday evening, Tine will tell you all she’s learned about the Christmas tree and discuss some of her creations. We’ll dissect discarded Christmas trees and explore the techniques to turn their tops into new treasures. The individual beauty and history of each piece of wood will make for objects that are both functional and precious.
