In the days running up to Easter, we’ll be exploring the old tradition of making a Palmpaasstok (‘Palm Sunday branch’). On Palm Sunday – the Sunday before Easter – Dutch kids used to dress up a branch with various decorations and carried it in the procession after church. The different attributes used, ranging from buxus greens and raisins to Easter breads in the shape of a hen, all carried symbolic references to the Catholic Easter story. The tradition also appeared in the Antwerp Kempen region and similar variations can be found across Europe.

The lovely Mariette from Loofwerk (near Delft) has been studying floral folklore and inspired us to make our own version of the Palmpaasstok. On Thursday 28.03 and Friday 29.03, we invite you to craft with us during a walk-in workshop. Laura Geurten will shape beautiful Easter breads for you to use. Do bring your kids! You’ll pay per branch so you can make one together.

  • Duration — Join in and stay for as long as you like between 16:00—18:30. One branch will require about one hour.
  • Location — Wilder, Provinciestraat 28, 2018 Antwerp
  • Level — No experience needed. Children – (grand)parent duos are very welcome.
  • Payment — Per ‘stok’. This includes a branch, an Easter bread, all kinds of craft materials and greenery.
